Killing Fire Ant Colonies (CORRECTION TO STORY) 8 Months ago Karma: 2
Here you go, Guys. Get ready for Spring. dinky

****Correction to story below: On request from Walter Reeves staff, we would like to make the correction to the article listed below. Mr Reeves does not nor never has endorsed the use of club soda as an affective way to remove fire ants.

Snip-it taken from Mr Reeves site: " a bit of Internet hyperbole has arisen. I have gotten variations of the paragraphs below several times. I am friends with both Eddie and Robert, but I have not endorsed the pouring of club soda onto fire ant mounds. From several replies that I've gotten, club soda has no effect on fire ants. The insects simply rebuild their mounds afterwards."

Killing Fire Ant Colonies

For those not familiar with Walter Reeves, he is from the University of Georgia agriculture department, specializing in home gardening. His television show, 'Gardening in Georgia ', is on each Saturday.

I know fire ants are picky eaters and any type poison that is effective takes seven feeding steps before the queen receives it. Plus, if the bait is stored in close proximity to any petroleum or fertilizer products they won't touch it. Contact poisons that are on the market just cause the colony to move away. A well developed colony can be as deep as 30 feet and spread out some 20 to 50 feet from the mound center... This was documented by studies done in the early 60's when they were first sited in South Alabama .

An environmentally friendly cure for fire ants has been announced by Walter Reeves on his Georgia Gardener radio program. Testimonials that it REALLY WORKS are coming in.

Simply pour two cups of CLUB SODA (carbonated water) directly in the center of a fire ant mound. The carbon dioxide in the water is heavier than air and displaces the oxygen which suffocates the queen and the other ants. The whole colony will be dead within about two days.

Besides eliminating the ants, club soda leaves no poisonous residue, does not contaminate the ground water, and does not indiscriminately kill other insects. It is not harmful to your pets, soaks into the ground. Each mound must be treated individually and a one liter bottle of club soda will kill 2 to 3 mounds.

What's the deal?

Is Handy on vacation or something?

You may be stepping on his toes. He likes...ummm...has a need to make these type of corrections. But, I'm ever so thankful for his services.

What instigated you, Kathey, to make this correction? Did Mr. Reeves threaten a lawsuit? Forgive me. I just find the situation hilarious.

Any dumbass ought to know that it takes more than club soda to kill ants.

I can see the "Club Soda Mafia" coming after you, now. You're getting into their profits. Maybe Dinky owns stock in Pepsico or Coca-Cola and wanted to subvertly earn dividens by overstating the possibilities of club soda; thereby increasing sales. You better have somebody you don't like start your car from now on.

This is a vast conspiracy. You are a part of it, now. Good luck with that.

Folks:

Found this discussion, and followed the advice and read article. Posted an e-mail; reply was the admonition of slow response.

Looked up e-mail addresses, and you can pursue.

etlc@ecoterralandscape.com <etlc@ecoterralandscape.com>;

GeorgiaGardenCoach@comcast.net <GeorgiaGardenCoach@comcast.net>

Am including my “2¢” worth, and other questions.

"...In reviewing my original, I consider the mix as to ratio of honey to the poison; relative to temperatures, and rain. Honey can become molasses-like, and would need to be fluid enough to flow into the nest and penetrate the depths. Maybe another sugar-based liquid could be employed? ..."

Hope this might be of use to you, at present.
